Circular economy

Saving resources with recycled materials

In 2022, the Dutch housing corporation Wonion renovated 16 homes in Silvolde in the Eastern Netherlands. The company wanted to renovate the ageing properties in line with the principles of the circular economy so that the raw materials produced by the demolition process could be reused and repurposed. This was an incredibly ambitious aim!

Zehnder and Wonion: a perfect partnership

As an indoor climate specialist, the Dutch Zehnder subsidiary in Zwolle was a key partner in this project. Wonion approached our Dutch subsidiary to supply 16 ventilation units with heat recovery systems to reduce the homes' energy needs. It was imperative that these units were recycled. This was something Zehnder had not done before, but was excited to be involved in.

This was a pioneering project for putting climate action and sustainability into practice, and a challenge we could not wait to get involved in.

Fit for the future

The project team eagerly went about its task. It was essential to source various used components that could guarantee the quality and efficiency of a new unit. A lot of testing took place to find the perfect parts for the job.

One of the fantastic things about this project was that all the Zehnder employees involved had their own motivation to create something sustainable.

Used motors and heat exchangers were cleaned, reconditioned, and thoroughly tested to ensure the exceptional air quality levels that Zehnder is well-known for. The recycled units worked as well as new units, and are being monitored in their new locations for efficiency.

'We were proud to be a partner in this interesting project and learned some important lessons about sustainability,' says Gert Jan van Liesholt. 'One of the fantastic things about this project was that all the Zehnder employees involved had their own motivation to create something sustainable.'
